The Silvers

The Silvers has mastered one of the most entertaining and nuanced styles of pop entertainment we've come across in recent years, and their new single ‘Watch Out!’ shows why you'll be hearing a lot more of them.

With undeniable vocal talent and fine-tuned production served straight up, The Silvers is a group that any pop music enthusiast will thoroughly enjoy. The success of their latest awarding-winning work has not gone unnoticed by the critics, with one recently writing: ‘The Silvers wields the much-sought-after combination of gorgeous vocals, impeccable melodic instinct and edgy production to produce this unstoppable animated pop anthem.’ Yet there’s something special about The Silvers that sets them apart from other pop acts. In a musical generation characterized by manufactured pop acts, The Silvers's originality and sincerity do more than stand out. They reveal qualities that cannot be engineered in the studio. There’s also an unpretentious realness to this group out of San Francisco and judging by their growing fan base, they may be precisely what the new generation didn't know it was missing. Independent reporter Blake Wright recently caught up with The Silvers to get an inside look at this exciting new group and to learn what they have in store for fans this year.

BLAKE: Let's just get this out in the open- What is the craziest thing that has happened to you in your music career?
THE SILVERS: One of the craziest things that happened during our music career was when Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band dropped in to one of our performances. He was pretty drunk and obnoxious. My daughter was there and commented, "Now I see why Cher dumped him!"

BLAKE: Your song ’Watch Out!’ is receiving a positive listener response on radio. What was your initial reaction when you first heard your song playing on radio?
THE SILVERS: To be honest, "Watch Out!" felt like a hit as soon as I wrote it. So hearing it on the radio was a real treat.

BLAKE: What was the inspiration behind your radio single?
THE SILVERS: I never know where the inspiration will come from. For "Watch Out!" I heard this drum intro which is on the video but not on the album. It just developed from there. I mean, how catchy is the line, "Watch out, LOVE is going to get you!"

BLAKE: It is often said that great art arises from difficult experience. Is there something in your life experience thus far that you would describe as the ‘catalyst’ or ‘fuel’ for your desire to create music?
THE SILVERS: I have always seen myself as a song writer, even at an early age. I took piano lessons when I was 8 or 9 and started composing right away. Of course, none of it was very good until I heard The Beatles for the first time. After that, I started writing for real and have been very happy with the results.

BLAKE: How would you characterize yourself as an artist/musician?
THE SILVERS: To quote George Harrison, "I am a jungle musician" meaning I don't read music. But I do hear chord changes in my head.

BLAKE: What has your experience been like working with the other people on your team?
THE SILVERS: Most of my experiences have been very good working with the other musicians, especially considering the distance between us. Tom (guitarist and song writer) and Glenn (drummer) live on opposite sides of Wisconsin. Then you have Drew and me out here in California putting it all together.

BLAKE: Did you come from a musical background? Are there other musicians in your family?
THE SILVERS: My mom and dad never played any instruments as far as I can remember, but my sister and I both picked up music for fun and learned to play the guitar on our own. My daughter used to play drums, but she didn't stick with it.

BLAKE: What do you find most rewarding about being an artist? What do you find most challenging?
THE SILVERS: I think the most rewarding thing about being a musician is hearing a song in my head, putting it down on my recorder as a demo and then seeing the song finally produced. The most challenging thing is to continue to put out good music. We have set ourselves a goal to release a 14 song album once a year in March or April and then a 6 song EP once a year at the end of summer; in September or thereabouts.

BLAKE: Who are your role models in music?
THE SILVERS: I listen to a lot of new stuff like Empire of the Sun, Mayer Hawthorne, Clean Bandit, Foster The People and Sia, but I have to say that I measure my music against The Beatles most of the time.

BLAKE: Describe your best or most memorable performance.
THE SILVERS: I think the most memorable performance to me was our 2014 induction into the Iowa R&R Hall of Fame for my old band, Silver Laughter. That's why we chose the name THE SILVERS and dropped the Laughter when we started recording again just as The Silver Beatles became The Beatles!

BLAKE: What advice would you give to young, aspiring artists out there who are unsure and need guidance?
THE SILVERS: My advice to younger musicians is to stick with it. It has been said it takes over 10,000 hours to master any craft, and I believe that to be true. So hang in there!

BLAKE: What's next for you as an artist? Is there an album in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it?
THE SILVERS: Right now because of studio issues, our regular March 2018 14 song LP release is going to be delayed until about May 2018, maybe even later. But there are going to be some really nice tunes on it hearkening back to 60's Motown so it will be worth the wait!

BLAKE: Wonderful! Thank you for sharing some insights into what makes you the artist that you are. I wish you continued success in your career.
