They're a new kind of Christian / gospel group - thoughtful, multi-talented and confident. With their debut radio single ‘Come Too Far’ running up the charts, The New Golden Crowns Of Louisville Kentucky is in a unique position to re-define the genre.

Generally speaking, Christian / gospel artists are highly dependent on strong lyrics and pure musicianship to succeed in the market, and The New Golden Crowns Of Louisville Kentucky is well-positioned to excel in this regard. Perhaps that's why critics had this to say about the group's award-winning work: ‘This lively Christian song would be considered ingenious by the standard of any genre - 'Come Too Far' has a bouncing energy that channels a divine joy lurking in us all.’ Now that their new radio single ‘Come Too Far’ is catching fire on radio, it's clear that we'll be hearing a lot more of them. Reporter Lauren Scott recently caught up with The New Golden Crowns Of Louisville Kentucky to learn more about this intriguing new group and what inspires them to create their music.

LAUREN: Let's just get this out in the open- What is the craziest thing that has happened to you in your music career?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: Nothing Really crazy. We just celebrated the groups 79th year of singing.

LAUREN: Your song ‘Come Too Far’ is receiving a positive listener response on radio. What was your initial reaction when you first heard your song playing on radio?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: It's just like going to the candy store for the first time. You just smile and say this can't be what you that it would be.

LAUREN: What was the inspiration behind your radio single?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: The past three years has been so hard. We lost three members to death. My second oldest son got killed in a car accident and my other son said daddy we come too far to turn around now. So we are keeping the name and group on.

LAUREN: It is often said that great art arises from difficult experience. Is there something in your life experience thus far that you would describe as the ‘catalyst’ or ‘fuel’ for your desire to create music?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: We just love to inspire the people with the songs we sing. We just what people to get closer to Christ.

LAUREN: How would you characterize yourself as an artist/musician?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: We really don't. We just love what we do.

 

LAUREN: What has your experience been like working with the other people on your team?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: We have been together so long we just click.

LAUREN: Did you come from a musical background? Are there other musicians in your family?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: We all come from a musical people in our families. Like me my father played an up right bass, my great uncle had a jazz band and the rest of the fellows have musicians in there families. I'm grateful to have one of my sons sing and play drums for the group.

LAUREN: What do you find most rewarding about being an artist? What do you find most challenging?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: Being able to touch people's lives with the songs we sing. It is a good feeling when a person comes up to you after a program and tell you they were touched by a song we sang. The most challenging thing is being a manager of a group. Trying to keep them all on the same page and get to where we need to be.

LAUREN: Who are your role models in music?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: Well there are a few: Harvey Watkins, Lee Williams, Willie Bank's, Willie Neal Johnson, The Pilgram Jubilees, The Williams Brother's. I could go on and on. We have done a lot of programs with these people. The man who got me started in this Mr. C. W. Sharpe of The Religious Five Of Louisville, Kentucky.

LAUREN: Describe your best or most memorable performance.
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: we where in St. Louis and we where with Willie Banks and The Pilgram Jubilees and some more groups and we had the best time with them. We never had a big hit CD but the music we put out got us into a lot of big programs with some of the top groups in the country.

LAUREN: What advice would you give to young, aspiring artists out there who are unsure and need guidance?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: Just stay at it and never let them see you sweat lol. Sometimes you want to give up but I just say keep going. It will pay off at the end.

LAUREN: What's next for you as an artist? Is there an album in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it?
THE NEW GOLDEN CROWNS OF LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY: Well we are getting are next project together. It is a live project. We will be recording it in Chicago, Illinois. I'll Just say you will hear some of our old music and we will have some new music for you. We just want you to enjoy the music and support us.
