Now that the mesmerizing new radio single 'I Wanna Be The One' is catching fire on radio, it's clear that we'll be hearing a lot more of Mazzi Tak. Perhaps that also explains why Mazzi Tak was the recipient of the prestigious Akademia Music Award for Best Pop Song on February 15, 2023. Reporter Lauren Scott recently caught up with Mazzi Tak to learn more about this intriguing artist and the inspiration behind what is clearly a captivating new sound.

LAUREN: Let's just get this out in the open- What is the craziest thing that has happened to you in your music career?
MAZZI TAK: I became a winner! I became a winner of the Akademia Music Awards 2023 in the Pop category by my song ‘I Wanna Be The One’. Becoming a winner was my dream for a long time. So I’m very happy!!

LAUREN: Your song 'I Wanna Be The One' is receiving a positive listener response on radio. What was your initial reaction when you first heard your song playing on radio?
MAZZI TAK: I couldn’t believe that my song is on the radio. There are so many stories behind this song though, I’m very happy! At the same time, I want to know what kind of listener listens to my song, and I thank all the listeners who responded to the radio. When I drove to Staten Island, I think the timing was perfect and I finally had a opportunity to listen to my song on the radio. And I was so excited to listen to it.

LAUREN: What was the inspiration behind your radio single?
MAZZI TAK: I was on vacation in Punta Cana, Dominica Republic. I was swimming at the beach all day and then later at night, I found a night beach club! People were dancing, and I got inspired. I started writing a melody line first. Then I went to a restaurant, a trio guitar band came to my table and began singing for me. And one of the guitarist kept saying “muy caliente, muy caliente”. When I looked at him he was playing guitar and sweating like a cow. Anyway, I didn’t know the meaning of “muy caliente”, but it sounds catchy, so I named this song ‘Muy Caliente’ in the beginning. When I wrote the lyrics, it wasn’t the fit I imagined. So I kept remembering my past love, and I got an inspiration and I changed the song title to ‘I Wanna Be The One’.

LAUREN: It is often said that great art arises from difficult experience. Is there something in your life experience thus far that you would describe as the ‘catalyst’ or ‘fuel’ for your desire to create music?
MAZZI TAK: I grew up in Japan. And I was trying to breakthrough in Japan a long time ago. And I actually became a winner of the vocal competition and then working as a singer and songwriter with my producer. But my producer always asked me about my love relationships and sexuality. So one day I thought I had enough of this question and I came out to my producer. And since after that I no longer had an opportunity to work with them. I lost everything. And I started thinking I should do everything by myself. Because I love music and at the same time, I wanted to quit but I just can’t. Because I truly know that creating music is in my blood.

LAUREN: How would you characterize yourself as an artist/musician?
MAZZI TAK: Like one of my projects. I wanna do this style with this character. And I use high tone areas vocal range with the music I create. I care about the character that everyone can tell whose song or who is singing.

LAUREN: What has your experience been like working with the other people on your team?
MAZZI TAK: I actually don’t have my own team. Basically I’m doing everything by myself. It’s a little hustle, but so much fun. But when I have to work with a team, it’s very stressful because I have to finish my music composition and recoding, and be reviewed by producers, edit my music, and I have to meet the dead line. But I felt fulfillment when people response to my work.

LAUREN: Did you come from a musical background? Are there other musicians in your family?
MAZZI TAK: When I was baby, My dad had a lot of instruments and a karaoke machine. And I remember I started singing with a karaoke machine when I was 3 years old. And I started drumming at 12 years old and joined an orchestra until I became a high school student. I started a rock band when I was 16. My family loves singing but no other musicians are in my family.

LAUREN: What do you find most rewarding about being an artist? What do you find most challenging?
MAZZI TAK: When I get a message from my fans and they’re saying they enjoy listening to my songs. Because I felt like my song helped someone. I found the most challenging thing is trying to create the next level of my music with a new style.

LAUREN: Who are your role models in music?
MAZZI TAK: I really don’t have right now. But I love listening to classic, rock to pop. And I like all the iconic musicians.

LAUREN: Describe your best or most memorable performance.
MAZZI TAK: When I performed in Tokyo, Japan a long time ago, I saw sumo wrestlers and female pro wrestlers were right in front of me and shouting and supported me until I finished. That was memorable and unforgettable!

LAUREN: What advice would you give to young, aspiring artists out there who are unsure and need guidance?
MAZZI TAK: Even in a tough situation, don’t give up on your music. Keep expressing what you want and submit to competitions, just keep trying!

LAUREN: What's next for you as an artist? Is there an album in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it?
MAZZI TAK: If I have an opportunity, I want to collaborate with other artists. Plus, I want to reach out to my fans though, maybe I want to go on a tour or online live. By the way, yes. I have a plan to work on my new album. I have been rejuvenated and I’m ready to start!

LAUREN: That sounds great! Thank you for giving us more insight into your life as an artist. I wish you much continued success in your career!
