Matthew Primous

Drawing on rich musical roots, personal instinct and a healthy dose of soul, new artist Matthew Primous brings a style all his own- and fans of his new single ‘That Enough’ all across the world are loving it.

Hailing from Rochester, New York, Matthew Primous has been balancing life responsibilities with his creative drive for years, but has recently found his musical interests evolving and expanding. This evolution, it turns out, has been the conduit for an exhilarating journey to the threshold of worldwide recognition. Critics of Matthew Primous 's award-winning work recently had this to say about the rising star: ‘Matthew Primous' emotional R&B/soul composition is a conscientiously executed species of the style, elevated by consummately apt vocal work and a selective lo-fi backing.’ Added to these honors, his debut radio single ‘That Enough’ is rapidly ascending the international charts. Reporter Andrew Edwards recently caught up with Matthew Primous to learn more about this intriguing R&B/soul artist, his unique musical vision and plans for the future.

ANDREW: When did your recording career begin? What inspired you to first make music?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: When I was in high school, I took this Voice Class, which taught me a lot about singing. They had a sign-up sheet for the New York State Music Festival and I signed up. The judge in the contest liked my performance and gave me an excellence grade for performing. That's when it started and when I did my first album back in 2004, I had this passion to show the world what I could do for music. I love music.

ANDREW: Your new single ’That Enough’ is currently getting a great response on radio. How would you describe your new single?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: My single, That Enough is about first love and in the midst of love. It talks about this man trying to prove to his woman that he loves her. He is at his last ends and he wants her to know before anything else that he is in love.

ANDREW: How do you feel your music has changed this past year?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: Well I have gone from Pop to R&B/Soul and the music is really about love. Not just about the sexy side of love but the intimate and personal side of love. Even getting to the fun and exciting part of love. Love is a strong and vivid concept in my songs.

ANDREW: What is your creative process when it comes to songwriting?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: I am poetic. I love using sounds and unique words. I do not count a word out just because it is too difficult. I take each word into thought and considered carefully what I used in my songs because words influenced people and you got to know what people you are talking to and about.

ANDREW: During this creative process, do you feel you work better alone or in a team?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: I liked both because alone I could think and do things my way and concentrate. And in a team like Akademia my music spread easily around the world. I think a professional artist has to have both working for them.

ANDREW: How do you feel about the Internet in the music business?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: The internet has made it both difficult and easy. I believed it is difficult to compete with other artists because it comes at a cost. And yet it is easy because there are free sites that allow your music to grow and be explore but you have to trust the vendor.

ANDREW: What is the best compliment you've ever received?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: There are a couple of compliments. Like when my music received the Number One Spot on Reverbnation's Chart-Topping Playlist and when I received the Number One Spot on Reverbnation's Best R&B/Soul Music. I am truly honored to be considered a King of R&B/Soul.

ANDREW: If you had an extra two hours every day, how would you spend it?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: I would spend the hours writing and perfecting my art. I love writing poetry in my spare time. I love using words in a different way. I would also practice singing songs in different keys and mixtures.

ANDREW: If you could sit down with one of your favorite artists, who would it be and what would you ask them?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: My favorite artist would be Ms. Aretha Franklin. I would asked her what she would do to prepare for a major concert? What was her greatest memory? What was her best songs and favorite? And what she does to keep her voice so strong and prevalent for decades?

ANDREW: In your opinion, which decade do you think produced some of the best music to date?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: I can't decide between the '60's and the '70's. I love Marvin Gaye's music and his songs still are powerful to this day. And he has sustained through the '80's, when I was born. I'm talking about music that I was born to. You got to mention the rest of Motown and Ms. Aretha Franklin.

ANDREW: When you are working on a new song, who is the first person you share it with?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: I share my song with family first to see if they liked it. Family has helped me with a lot down the years and I may not mention them much but they are my rock. Only in certain instances do I bring the music straight to the fans on Reverbnation at https://www.reverbnation.com/matthewprimous

ANDREW: Is there new material in the works and when will fans get to hear it?
MATTHEW PRIMOUS: I have over 103 songs on Soundcloud at https://soundcloud.com/matthew-primous , fans are welcome to listen and join. It's like my own musical library. I like to work on my music in my own time but I will keep in touch with the team and fans out of respect for them and their loyalty.

ANDREW: That sounds great! Thank you for giving us a peek into your life as an artist. I wish you continued success in your career.
