Lady Elizabeth Townsend

Ten seconds into the chorus of her single ‘My King Jesus’ and you'll be nodding your head. With an infectious energy and melodic hook, the gospel artist known as Lady Elizabeth Townsend seems poised to vault straight up the charts.

Yakima, Washington native Lady Elizabeth Townsend’s love of music runs deep. It shows in her unswerving movement towards her dream of gospel stardom and in her award-winning work that has compelled the critics to rave: ‘Lady Elizabeth Townsend delivers a powerful and infectious song that shows off her personality and love for Jesus - sure to be a fan favorite among those who share her passion.’ Unlike many of her contemporary gospel artists, however, Lady Elizabeth Townsend has an edge. Her music combines a flawless musical aesthetic with evocative lyrical elements. Coupled with a memorable hook, her new single ‘My King Jesus’ is attracting fans across the globe. Recently, reporter Blake Wright caught up with this intriguing artist to find out more about her musical inspiration and plans for the future.

BLAKE: Let's just get this out in the open- What is the craziest thing that has happened to you in your music career?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: Lost my voice at the age of 40 due to acute thyroid disease.

BLAKE: Your song ’My King Jesus’ is receiving a positive listener response on radio. What was your initial reaction when you first heard your song playing on radio?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: I never thought growing up singing in the church where my mother played the piano and singing with my four other sisters that the day would come when the Lord dropped a song in my spirit. And knowing the first time I sang it at our little white church in Yakima, Washington how overjoyed they were. Never realizing years later that this song would hit the global radio audience and my heart was filled with joy and excitement to learn it had now hit radio stations around the world. I still cannot believe it.

BLAKE: What was the inspiration behind your radio single?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: Growing up with a strong spiritual background, Mama always took us to church and taught us about Jesus. We would sing those old gospel songs and at the early age of six, I gave my life to Jesuus. It was not until many years later when I came to know that somewone was changing something on the inside of me. Not fully understanding or grasping the born again experience. I just knew I felt brand new and then in my spirit came the song. I find no fault in the man. The more I sing it the greater I felt his presence until this very day it's like it was yesterday each time I sing it.

BLAKE: It is often said that great art arises from difficult experience. Is there something in your life experience thus far that you would describe as the ‘catalyst’ or ‘fuel’ for your desire to create music?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: I believe often times, one judges themselves too harshly even when making mistakes in life, not realizing that mistakes are all a part of life's learning process and experience. It is how we get up and forgive ourselves knowing that God has already forgiven us the moment we ask. It is in those most difficult moments in life you can turn whatever is affecting you into a song, a book, poem, movie or invention. I choose to write and most of the time, the song will follow.

BLAKE: How would you characterize yourself as an artist/musician?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: My global passion comes from the words on the inside of me are given by the inspiration of God, and it is to bring the world at large the awareness just how much He loves you and me. I was not born singing country but when it comes out of my spirit, that's the way it sounds. I have great joy in knowing the words He has given me for books and music some day will change the world. My music is for the hope and healing for all nations. Each song as of now has a novel to go with it. So I see a global vision as being an artist/author.

BLAKE: What has your experience been like working with the other people on your team?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: Sometimes working and relating to others my music and vision can often bring some tests. Just recently my mother passed away on February 2018. I wrote a song and sang it at her homegoing service. Well my friends and family only have known me for the My King Jesus CD. So it takes a bit of them catching up and believing in the new songs as well as remaining faithful to the old. That can often bring a set of new challenges and convincing until they hear it over and over again.

BLAKE: Did you come from a musical background? Are there other musicians in your family?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: Yes, my mother played the piano at our church for over 30 years where we all grew up singing. My two sisters have a singing career in gospel ministry.

BLAKE: What do you find most rewarding about being an artist? What do you find most challenging?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: The most thing I count rewarding as an artist is when people receive and love what you do. Love being a part of my newfound family The Akademia, which has honored me and helped me to promote the music I love making. The most challenging is marketing to a new set o audience and moving into local or global radio and tv markets around the world.

BLAKE: Who are your role models in music?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: Dottie Rambo, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Carrie Underwood, Shirley Ceasar, Whitney Houston, Betty Jean Robinson, Pastor Mary Francis, Marshall Williams.

BLAKE: Describe your best or most memorable performance.
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: When I sang the gospel song in a bar. They went wild. When a company from Nasville came to town and thought my song would go on one of Amy Grant's album. But I was unable to make the trip to Nashville.

BLAKE: What advice would you give to young, aspiring artists out there who are unsure and need guidance?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: Always stay true to yourself, never give up. If you can dream it, you can achieve it. Have faith and trust God.

BLAKE: What's next for you as an artist? Is there an album in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it?
LADY ELIZABETH TOWNSEND: I HAVE THREE SONGS READY TO BE RELEASE BUT THEY NEED MIXING AND RECORDING. THESE SONG WILL HIT YOUR SOUL AND MAKE YOU WANT TO WORK HARD TO LOVE EVERYBODY AND MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. ALL COUNTRY GOSPEL FOR THAT IS MY GENRE. I WOULD LIKE TO TOUR AND SHARE MY PASSION AND VISION WITH THE WORLD. I WOULD LIKE TO FORM THE LADY ELIZABETH MY KING JESUS BAND TO GO ON TOUR NOW.

BLAKE: That sounds great! Thank you for giving us a peek into your life as an artist. I wish you continued success in your career.
